9/30 Monday

1. Warm-Up-In your Norman Language Arts google doc, answer the following question. Make sure to date your post, fully explain your answer, and use complete sentences.




2. Weekly Vocabulary-Once again, your Weekly Vocabulary comes from our class novel. Take a few minutes and get to know these words.

3. Weekly Vocabulary Assignment-This week we are doing a 5x5x5. Here are the instructions:

*Directions: Write each word and its definition five times. When finished, create a paragraph with at least five sentences that uses all five words correctly. Make sure to underline the vocabulary words in your created paragraph.

4. Summarizing-Today we are going to start a lesson on summarizing written passages. This will be extremely important for your future as successful readers. Now, do the following steps (Be sure to TAKE GOOD NOTES!):

      1.Go to the following website and review their tips on summarizing.

7. Torture in the Inquisition-Torture was a big part of the Inquisition. Go to my Torture in the Inquisition  Google doc and read about the various techniques used for torture during the Inquisition. On a blank sheet of paper, you need to rank the torture methods by how painful you think they would be. For example, whichever technique you think would be most painful would be your number 1 and so on.

1. Article Review-Read the following article . After reading, write a quick review of the article in your Norman Language Arts Google doc.  Your review should answer the following questions:

Also, create two E.O.G style questions about the article.


2. Vocabulary-Study your Weekly Vocabulary Words. There may be a quiz tomorrow!

5.  Writing Pre-Assessment - In your Norman Language Arts Google doc, I'd like you to write a short, persuasive essay on the following prompt:

Your school has asked you to write an essay that evaluates a good friend. This essay will appear in the next newsletter published by the school.

Write an essay for your school's newsletter and justify the qualities you believe a good friend must have.

As you write your essay, be sure to:
*Focus on the qualities of a friend
*Consider the purpose, audience, and context of your essay
*Organize your essay so that your ideas progress logically
*Include relevant details that clearly develop your essay
*Edit your essay for standard grammar and language usage

1. Game Time-Let's get the day started with some games. You can play either Eight Letter Game or Wordsearch.
Also play our new game, Knoword.  Here is the website's definition:

Knoword is a game of quick thinking, smart decisions and great words. When you begin, you will be given one randomly generated dictionary definition along with the first letter of its corresponding word. You must fill in the rest of the word to experience a gain in points and an added time bonus. You will start off with one minute before the game ends, and every word is an opportunity to extend your time. If you're ever stuck on a word, just hit the skip button and a new puzzle will present itself.

If you're able to string together correct answers, you will notice yourWord streak counter increasing. You can accumulate badges and additional points by achieving certain amounts of consecutively correct words... How far can you get?



So, I'd like you try out KNOWORD and write up a review and email it to me! Did you like it? Was it easy or hard?

1. Warm-Up-Creative Writing

Look at the following picture. Write a quick short story about the picture. Be creative and try to include some of your weekly vocabulary words.



2. Weekly Vocabulary-Take a few minutes and review those words. Play Scatter or Space Race, take the practice quiz, or just study!

3. Weekly Vocabulary 3-2-1. Take 10  minutes to get some more work done on those Vocabulary 3-2-1s. 

3x -- Spelling (writing the word)
2x -- Definition (write the definition)
1x -- Use correctly in a sentence (create your own sentence)

4. Sentence Structure-Today we will begin our lesson on sentence structure.

5. Class Novel-Let's spend a few minutes with Pony and the gang!

8. REMEDIATION ASSIGNMENT-

Nuclear Disaster -- Take a few minutes and read about theaccidents at nuclear power plants in Japan in 2010. In an email addressed to me please type out a list of 10 facts that you learned. Please use complete sentences and include the most important facts you found.
Also, leave your thoughts about nuclear energy. Nuclear is a relatively clean energy source (and doesn't contribute to global warming), but also has major drawbacks. Is it safe enough? Do you feel safe that a nuclear power plant is in Raleigh and Wilmington? We haven't had any major accidents here, but who knows about the future?
