10/31 Friday



HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!

As you can see, I am not in school today. However, this does not mean you should misbehave or not do your work. Numbers 1-5 are for Language Arts and 6-7 are for Social Studies

1. Free Rice-Take about 10 minutes to play some Free Rice.

2. Halloween Vocabulary-Here are your special Halloween Vocabulary Words! Take about 10 minutes to really get to know them.

3. Weekly Vocabulary 3-2-1-For this week's words, you will be creating a 3-2-1. These are due in 20 minutes. When you finish, turn them in to the sub. Here are the instructions again:

Write each word 3 times
Write each word and definition 2 times
Write 1 sentence using each of your vocab words (meaning you will be writing 10 sentences)

3. Create-a-Quiz-Since you guys got off easy and had no quiz this week, you are going to use this time to make one. Using all 10 words, create a 10 question, multiple choice quiz. Make sure to include an answer key. You should do this on a blank piece of paper and turn it in when you finish.

4. NC Write-Keep working on the "Halloween" prompt. Make sure it is at least 300 words.

5. Short Story-Let's start our short story for the week. It is called The Lottery. You guys will read the story on your own. Once you have finished reading, answer the following questions in Google doc titled "The Lottery" Make sure you share this doc with Mr. Norman. Remember to answer in complete sentences!

a. What happened at the end of the story? How did the ending make you feel?
b. What in the story might have helped you predict the kind of ending the story had?
c. What did the author to set the tone for the story?
d. Why do you think the Village still does the Lottery each year?

6. Social Studies Warm-Up-Answer the following question in your Norman Social Studies Google doc.
At what age are you officially "too old" to go trick or treating? Make sure you give reasons and fully explain your answer.

7. Origins of Halloween-You should finish up your Halloween research that you started yesterday. It must be completed by the end of this class period.

-Halloween-research the holiday itself. When did it start? Where did it start? Why did it start?
-Jack-o-Lanterns-What is the origin of the Jack-o-Lantern? Why are they made from pumpkins?
-Costumes-Why do kids dress in costumes on Halloween? When and where did this tradition start?
-Candy-For this one, you need to pick your all-time favorite candy and research its origin.

You are to put the findings of your research into a Google doc titled "Halloween Origins" and share it with Mr. Norman.

8. Social Studies Warm-Up-Answer the following question in your Norman Social Studies Google doc.

What is your all-time favorite Halloween costume? Why is it your favorite? Fully explain your answers.

9. Origins of Halloween-Part of truly understanding something is learning about its history. The more we know about something, the better we can appreciate it. With that in mind, we are going to be researching the origins of things associated with Halloween. You have 2 days to complete this. Complete this assignment on a blank piece of paper. You are to research the origins of the following:

-Halloween-research the holiday itself. When did it start? Where did it start? Why did it start?
-Jack-o-Lanterns-What is the origin of the Jack-o-Lantern? Why are they made from pumpkins?

*Directions: Write each word and its definition seven times. When finished, create a paragraph with at least seven sentences that uses all seven words correctly. Make sure to underline the vocabulary words in your created paragraph.

4. Scope-Let's Finish our story and do some activities.

5. Small Group-We are going to do some more Main Idea practice.

6. NC Write-Continue working on the "Who Am I" prompt.

Now that we know more about the real story of Columbus, do you think he was more of a hero or a villain? Fully explain your answers.

9. Columbus Quiz-Head over to this site and read the 10 things you may not know about Columbus. Afterwards, you are to use the site to create a 15 question true or false quiz about the information found on the site. Make sure your questions are in complete sentences and make sure to include an answer key.

1. Game Time-Let's get the day started with some games. We have a new game I want everyone to try. It is called Popword. Directions are below:
Play Popword by click-and-dragging across adjacent letters in the grid and releasing the mouse button when you have selected a word. Each successive selected letter must be directly next to the previously selected letter (either horizontally, vertically or diagonally).
If the word you have selected is a valid English word, the letters will 'pop' away and the letters above them will fall to take their place. You score points for each word you pop. Longer words score many more points than shorter words.

7. Motivations for Exploration-There were many different reasons why the explorers would risk their lives to travel to completely unknown worlds. You are going to check out the following websites. Using the information you gather from the websites, I want you to write on a blank sheet of paper 5 reasons why explorers were so eager to explore during the Age of Exploration. Also, write at least 10 facts that you learn from the websites.

Why do you think that exploring the world became such a big deal in the 15th and 16th centuries? What do you think that they were looking for?

7. Age of Exploration-So far we have covered the periods of history known as the Reformation and the Renaissance. Now we are moving on to my favorite period of time! We will spend the next few weeks covering The Age of Exploration.

1. Warm-Up-In your Norman Language Arts google doc, answer the following question. Make sure to date your post, fully explain your answer, and use complete sentences.

6. Social Studies-Grab your Social Studies notebook and let's talk about the Inquisition.

7. Torture in the Inquisition-Torture was a big part of the Inquisition. Go to myTorture in the Inquisition Google doc and read about the various techniques used for torture during the Inquisition. On a blank sheet of paper, you need to rank the torture methods by how painful you think they would be. For example, whichever technique you think would be most painful would be your number 1 and so on.

1. Warm-Up-Free Rice Friday. Today's goal.....3000!

2. Reading Passage-We are going to practice our close reading skills. First I will demonstrate on the board and then you guys will take over.

3. Weekly Vocabulary-Finish those crossword puzzles.

4. NC Write-We will go back to the "Favorite Room" prompt and see if we can bring our scores up anymore.

5. Reformation Reporter-A reporter's main job is to get answers to questions. You are going to spend the next few days researching the Reformation. You will then answer, on a blank sheet of paper, the following questions:

WHAT-What was the Reformation? Be sure to fully explain your answers.

WHO-Pick 4 important people from the Reformation. Tell me who they were and why they were important to the Reformation.

WHEN-Pick and explain at least 3 important dates from the Reformation. Explain why the dates you chose are important to the Reformation.

HOW-Explain in detail how the Reformation started. What happened before that led to this movement?

WHY-Why did this movement happen? Why was it so important to the world? Why is it still important?

WHERE-What were some of the important locations of the Reformation?

6. This Day in History-Go to the following website and look over some of the things that happened on this date in history. Pick 5 things which you think are important and send me an email (Titled: Today in History) explaining why you chose the 5 events that you did. Remember to fully explain your answers.
